This time of year is always so exciting and this year especially will be filled with a lot of mixed emotions upon our return. We know that school will look and operate differently this year as a result of continued efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. The Blythwood PSC/A has been communicating with our Principal, Ms Farrell, our Trustee, Rachel Chernos-Lin, and various levels of the TDSB and Government to better understand the planning that is taking place for our return and to support the changes from a parent council perspective. We know that everyone is working diligently and considering all possibilities, ensuring that student and staff well-being and safety is the top priority. Now more than ever, the Blythwood Parent community and the school, including Ms Farrell, our administration team and the teachers, will need to work together to make this year the positive and fun experience Blythwood Junior has always been for our children. We look forward to working closely with all parents to make this another incredible year at Blythwood Junior!
Blythwood Junior is a very special school with a history of excellence in academics, athletics, the arts and community involvement. We have a wonderful combination of efforts from the principal, staff and parent volunteers which together, create a strong community to support our children’s educational experience. We are so fortunate to be a part of this enriched learning environment and look forward to working with the Blythwood community to make an impact for our children.
The Blythwood Parent School Council’s (PSC) purpose is to support and enrich the academic, athletic, arts and social activities of the school. We strive to create an atmosphere of inclusion for everyone and act in the interests of the Blythwood children while representing the parent community at large. Parent participation is fundamental to Blythwood’s tradition of excellence. We promote school spirit, and foster programs that focus on the well-being of students and increase our children’s awareness of their role in the greater community. Parental support is critical to the success of our programs and creating new opportunities for our children. We strongly encourage all Blythwood parents to get involved in the school in some capacity, whether it is attending the PSA/C meeting to vote on a proposed budget, or volunteer for programs and/or events such as our Kiss N’ Ride, Community Outreach, Family Dance or pizza lunch. Your help is always needed and there are countless ways to make a difference. Even though our in-person volunteer opportunities and PSC/A events are on hold, we can still come together to create new and special memories through virtual events. Hopefully with some time we will once again be able to welcome parent volunteers back into the school.
The Parent School Association (PSA) is our charitable organization. Registered for tax purposes, its fundraising efforts have provided the school with curriculum support (e.g., chess programs, literacy and numeracy materials) and tools (e.g., computers, sports and playground equipment) that help to make Blythwood such a wonderful place to learn. Our largest fundraising event is our bi-annual Gala. The proceeds raised from the Gala make one of the largest impacts on the school and our children. The money raised from the previous Gala in 2018 funded our incredible Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics lab, which has provided our children with an enriched educational experience in STEM and will continue to do so in the years to come. While we were unable to hold our Gala in spring 2020 as planned, there were some pre-Gala fundraising efforts that raised funding for important initiatives at the school, specifically the very timely outdoor revitalization project, which includes the outdoor classroom and the Kindergarten playground. We are planning to continue the efforts from last year’s Gala activities in hopes of raising more critical funding for the school and the programs at Blythwood.
Please feel free to contact us if you would like more information about our activities, or if you would like to become involved. We also encourage you to visit our PSC/A website frequently for the most up-to-date information regarding the many activities and programs that are running at our school. Don’t forget to sign up to our mailing list.
We wish everyone a successful and fun year ahead at Blythwood.
